Risk that Propane Tank Would Explode Raised Concerns

A fire that broke out early Thursday morning in or near a homeless encampment along Santa Rosa Creek in east Santa Rosa proved dicey for firefighters because of a large number of aerosol cans and a 5-gallon propane tank that started venting flammable vapor, fueling the flames, fire personnel said.

No one was injured in the 6:45 a.m. fire behind the Union Hotel and restaurant off Mission Boulevard, near Montgomery Drive, officials said.

But the risk that the propane tank would explode raised concerns, Battalion Chief Mark Basque said.

Thick, black smoke was seen by emergency crews when they arrived at the home near Fruitridge Road and Hedge Avenue around 4:30 p.m., said paramedic Capt. Jon Rudnicki.

“There were several propane tanks off-gassing in the back of the house, unique building construction that enabled the fire to persistently burn, and a partial roof collapse,” Rudnicki said. “After an extended battle crews gained the upper hand and completely extinguished the fire.”
